Abstract
This study aimed to identify the mediating effects of smartphone overdependence on the associations between active and passive stress coping and depressive symptoms in old age among 286 older adults aged 65 or over and how these associations differ by gender. A total 286 participants were recruited through an online survey in 2022 and the data were analyzed by using multigroup structural equation modeling. Major findings are summarized as follows: first, women showed higher depressive symptoms than men. Second, the path coefficient from active stress coping to smartphone overdependence was higher for men than for women, indicating a statistically significant gender group difference. Third, the mediating effect of smartphone overdependence on the association between stress coping and depressive symptoms was statistically significant for only men. Based on the study findings, we discussed practical measures to deal with the issues of smartphone overdependence and depressive symptoms in old age.
